Dear Fellow Ministers,

You know the story:  caught between duty and love.My mind pictures some old movie where a soldier must decide whether or not to arrest the "enemy" which includes a woman whom he has fallen in love. That's pretty dramatic, but it highlights an issue that comes in our spiritual lives: duty or love?  The great news in the faith is that the two are not mutually exclusive! We too often make them exclusive when we look at our faith as a"role" or a"job" and make it a part of duty. That is not the intent, however.I remember telling someone at a camp where I was working while in college that I had to leave on Saturday night because I "had to preach" on Sunday morning. A gentlemen pulled me aside and said, "No, young man, you get to preach tomorrow. Don't you ever forget that."

This issue between duty and love comes up in a great overlooked book of the Bible, Philemon. We will read the whole book on Sunday (don't worry, it's only one chapter!) as we consider what word God will speak to us. Please read through this with me in preparation for talking about duty and love. Let us come prepared to God at work in our midst.

I look forward to being in ministry with you this week!

In Christ's Service,

David
